Keep on Moving

Here at Sanderstead Physio we’re always saying, ‘whatever you do keep moving’, so we thought we’d look at some free fitness activities you can get involved with to get fit in 2019. You may be surprised by the ease of getting involved with some of these activities, and once the routine begins, you’ll find it hard to stop.

Stair climbing

We thought it would be easiest to start off with a simple exercise you can do in the comfort of your own home or at work to save you from the cold winter freeze. Stair climbing is said to burn more calories per minute than jogging, and it also counts towards your recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week, so think about taking the stairs instead of a lift next time!

Park football

Although the idea of approaching a random group of people playing football may seem daunting, if you crack up the nerve, it won’t go amiss. Choose a group of similar ability or age range to you, and often the goalkeeper is best to approach, as they can’t run away! This is a great opportunity to make new friends and burn some of the many calories we all gain over the festive season.

Couch to 5K

If approaching strangers doesn’t tickle your fancy, why not try the Couch to 5K schemes in place around all London Boroughs, and also get involved with Park Runs as you go. Running is great for weight loss, strengthening bones and improving cardiovascular fitness, whilst the fresh air always helps one’s stress levels. The running plan is made for absolute beginners and can be found here.

Whilst you can get details of the popular Park Runs around the UK here.

Home exercises

If the idea of all of these activities being away from home daunts you, we also feel home exercise can pay huge dividends to burning calories and feeling great. You can choose from six 10-minute home workouts which the NHS has compiled here, or take up a bigger challenge with a selection of gym-free workouts to improve your general fitness after the winter months.

It’s always a great idea to keep moving, and you can find more details on these free ways to get fit, as well as skipping, park games and cycle-to-work ideas at the NHS website.
