Physiotherapists treat physical disorders or problems in patients. These disorders may arise due to accident, illness or aging. Patients’ body or body parts like muscles, bones, heart, circulation and lungs may get affected due to above mentioned causes. Physiotherapy applies a range of activities like manipulation, massage, therapeutic exercise, electrotherapy, ultrasound, acupuncture and hydrotherapy to cure the patients from their illness and help them settle themselves.
A physiotherapist’s core skills include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and application of electro-physical modalities. A physiotherapist may initially work in almost all the departments in a hospital, like outpatients department, intensive care, women’s health, elderly care, stroke services, orthopaedics, mental health and learning disability services, occupational health, paediatric etc.
Physiotherapy is a constantly evolving profession. Physiotherapists are committed to lifelong learning and upgrade their skills through continuous education programme and post-graduate education. In post-graduate education they may specialise in subjects like anatomy, pathology, physiology, sports injuries etc. They attend both classroom sessions and hands-on learning.
